Along with Waterville in the nether
reaches of County Kerry, Royal County Down is arguably the finest links
never to have held an Open Championship.
Praise for this beautiful links has come from far wide - Tom Watson, as
qualified as anyone, said that the first 11 holes were ‘the finest
consecutive holes of links golf’ he had ever played.
The course is blessed with rugged dunes, all ordained with a colourful
blend of purple heather and yellow flowering gorse; the rough is thick
and portrays an unkempt appearance whilst sea grasses grow from the lip
of the bunkers in such heavy tufts that it is better to land in the traps
than just clear them.
This is truly a wonderful course and its outstanding beauty is only matched
by the thrill of playing it.
